This week is #SmallCharityWeek – a chance to raises awareness of the essential work of the small charity sector, who make an invaluable contribution to the lives of millions of individuals, communities and causes across the UK. This is a chance to shine the spotlight on some of our small charities and champion and celebrate the incredible work that their staff and volunteers do day in/day out to make the lives of others better.
Here at Social Responsibility, we aim to highlight and help enable smaller, local charities to thrive so that they can continue to improve lives and strengthen communities.
At the heart of our purpose is the acknowledgment of the benefits that all charities bring to our society. However, small, local charities (i.e. those with an income under £100k) make up 75% of the 168,000 registered charities in England & Wales yet only received less than 3% of the £79bn income generated by registered charities in 2018-19. We want to try to help redress that inequality.
Smaller, more local charities are finding operating conditions increasingly more challenging, as they face stiff competition for funding and donations from better equipped, better resourced, more well-known larger charities. We want to try to change that.
We have listed on our website hundreds of charities across England & Wales. The charities that we have chosen to list are those that have an income between £25k - £100k, a website AND a clear compliance history in respect of timely submission of accounts and annual returns to the sector regulator, the Charity Commission.
In raising awareness of these small, local charities, the Social Responsibility website seeks to build the public’s confidence and trust in those charities, while also strengthening their profile and reputation. These invaluable small charities will then be better equipped to secure funding and donations to help sustain their efforts in making a difference to the lives of others.
